Storing Your Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the disadvantages of aromatherapy is that some of the oils are not cheap, not even if you buy from an online discount holistic supply shop. Because aromatherapy essential oils are man made natural (and thus, limited) ingredients, some of them are more expensive than prescription medicines. For example, it takes about 100 POUNDS of rose petals to make one OUNCE of rose essential oil. If you are going to buy that, you need to protect your investment by knowing how to store your aromatherapy essential oils.

Dark Glass Bottles

Unless it is an inexpensive aromatherapy essential oil you use often, your oils should not be stored in light colored or clear bottles. They definitely need to be in glass – NOT plastic. Plastic just cannot protect oil for a long length of time. If you can get a price break on an essential oil because it’s sold in a clear or plastic bottle, you need to transfer the oil to a dark colored glass bottle as soon as possible.

Indigo, jade green, dark brown or black are fine colors for your glass aromatherapy essential oil bottles. If you are thinking of making your own essential oil blends (which is one of the joys of aromatherapy), then you will need a few empty dark glass bottles anyway. Unlike the oils, they are quite inexpensive. They need to have tight lids. Buy a baby dropper to help mix the oils unless the bottles come with drip tops.

Keep It Dark

You need to store your aromatherapy essential oils in a cool, dark place. Avoid keeping them in the sunlight, near heat sources or even under indoor lighting. The light can make them spoil more rapidly. However, keeping the oils in the refrigerator is usually too cold a place to keep them and makes the oils go very thick. However, if this is your only alternative, you would need to set the oil out for fifteen minutes or so to warm up.

Lifespan

The shelf life of your aromatherapy essential oil, if stored in a cool dark place in dark colored glass bottles, should last a couple of years or even more. However, if you are using so little of the oil that you have the bottle for a few years, perhaps you shouldn’t buy that particular oil again. Going to an aromatherapy website or getting a good aromatherapy book can help you find less expensive oils to substitute.

Enjoying Organic Essential Oils

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Organic essential oils taken from organically grown plants and are a pure, unadulterated, therapeutic grade oil that is also excellent for the environment because when farmers practice growing these oils the organic way it prohibit the use or chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides that leave damaging deposits in the soil, air and water supply. The organic essential oils are mainly used in aromatherapy, bath salts and similar products. Many organic essential oils are designed for “over-the-counter” sale in retail shops which you can purchase them at places like health-food stores, healing centers, spas, pharmacies and drug stores. Some of my favorite organic essential oils are lavender, rosewood, peppermint and lemon, which can be used through an inhalator, topically on your skin or put into baths for better relaxation on a stressful day.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy with essential oils can be very effective for both the mind and body. Many aromatherapy oils help you relax plus allow you to balance your emotions and helps you in creating a more positive atmosphere and attitude towards life. It can help in reducing the emotional issues that many people experience with weight gain and certain scents have been shown to help curb your appetite. Aromatherapy can help reduce stress, give you more energy, and help alleviate migraine headaches triggers, as well as improve your complexion and treat skin irritations. Rosewood essential oil has a unique place because the chemicals constituents up to 95 percent of just one ingredient , which is linalool and is considered very mild, soothing alcohol, with strong anti-microbial properties for skin bacteria issues.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is probably the most well known and most used oil. Lavender also has a profound affect on the mental and emotional state of people and with low doses acts as a sedative, but higher doses are very stimulating for some people. Lavender oil can help relieve insect stings or bites and stimulates white blood cell formation, which strengthens the body’s natural immune system and makes it effective for preventing flu and colds. Bergamot is also very good, when blended with tea tree oil and lavender for suppressing the development of cold sores and shingles or chicken pox. It is also sometimes used for treating headaches mixed with other oils like lavender and peppermint.

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Several essential oils listed below are genuine therapeutic grade essential oils, grown on organic farms or ethically and sustainably gathered from wild plants. Therapeutic grade essential oils provide health enhancing benefits via inhalation and absorption into the skin. Some common uses of therapeutic quality, organic essential oils are: Diffuse into the air using an aroma lamp or diffuser, but if you don’t have either of these things you can just use a bowl of warm water. Most of the essential oils in general are specifically used for flavoring foods and to help in the perfume industries, but be careful because these are not considered organic therapeutic oils. Some other therapeutic properties are basil which helps with calming an upset stomach and also has a mild anti-spasmodic for muscles, making it great for massages. Eucalyptus is considered by most aroma therapists to be the best choice for most therapeutic uses, as it is milder than most and even safe for children to use. Nutmeg essential oil is another one that is considered spice oils which grows in the tropics and has a strong spicy fragrance, and its therapeutic properties include a strong attraction with the digestive system, including a digestive stimulant for nausea, and to help with the assimilation of food. Rose essential oil is in my opinion the number one oil for balance, including emotional balance and also physical balance, but also helps the nervous system and the female reproductive system.

You should only use the finest organic essential oils like peppermint which is invigorating; lavender used for soothing and calming; lime and orange being citrus are stimulants for the senses. Pure, Organic Essential Oils are a remarkable, energizing and health promoting supplements, which provides better therapeutic healing.

Essential Oils Can Be an Aid During the Grief and Sorrow Process

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Grief and sorrow are part of the human condition-we all get to have this experience more than once in our life time. As we have learned, there are stages that we go through in working through grief and sorrow to a place of acceptance and eventually to moving beyond our grief to living our life once again. Essential oils can help in that process and ease the burden.

What Oils Are Helpful?

Bergamot-(Citrus bergamia)- the medical properties of this oil are calming. Bergamot offers hormonal support and is antidepressant. The citrus fragrance relieves anxiety and has mood lifting qualities. It can be used for agitation, depression, and insomnia. It can be diffused or directly inhaled.  Be careful to avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 36 hours since bergamot is phototoxic to the skin.

Roman Chamomile–(Chamaemelum  nobile)-the medical properties of this wonderful oil include being relaxing, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory , and it detoxifies blood and liver. It can be used for relieving restlessness, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and skin conditions such as dermatitis. The fragrance may also dispel anger, stabilize the emotions, and help release emotions linked to the past. You can diffuse it or inhale directly as well as apply it directly to the skin. This is a very safe oil and is often used with small children and the frail elderly.

Juniper–(Juniperus osteosperma)- This is a universal oil that is a digestive cleanser/stimulant, increases circulation through the kidneys and promotes excretion of toxins, and is detoxifying. The fragrance evokes feeling of health, love, and peace and may help elevate one’s spiritual awareness. You can directly inhale or diffuse this oil as well as apply it directly to the skin or dilute it with a good carrier oil.

Lavender– (Lavandula angustafolia)- the medical properties of this universal healing oil include being analgesic, relaxing, and anti-inflammatory. It is very effective for insomnia and nervous tension. Lavender balances both physically and emotionally and has been shown to dramatically improve concentration and mental acuity. You can directly inhale or diffuse this oil and apply it undiluted on the skin or diluted for a massage.  Be sure you are using therapeutic essential grade Lavender, it is often extended with hybrid lavender or synthetic linalool and linalyl acetate which are two key constituents of the oil.

What About Some Known Essential Oil Blends-Which Ones Help in Grief and Sorrow?

Valor(TM)-balances energies to instill courage, confidence, and self esteem. I have found this blend helpful in realigning both balance and alignment in the body. Ingredients are rosewood, blue tansy, frankincense and spruce in a sweet almond oil carrier.

Release(TM) -this blend helps release anger and memory trauma from the liver in order to create an emotional well being. Letting go of negative emotions and frustrations enables one to progress in a positive way. The ingredients are ylang  ylang, lavandin, geranium, sandalwood , and blue tansy in a carrier oil of organic olive oil.

Harmony(TM)-promotes physical and emotional healing by creating a harmonic balance for the energy centers of the body. This blend is one I personally use every single day. It brings us into harmony with all things, people and cycles of life. It is beneficial in reducing stress and amplifying well-being. It combats feelings of discord and is uplifting and elevating to the mind thus creating a positive attitude.

Forgiveness(TM) -this is a favorite oil requested by my students in my courses on emotional release work (ERT or Emotional Release Therapy) with essential oils. It helps one to release hurt feelings, insults, and negative emotions. It contains rose, melissa, helichrysum, angelica, frankincense, sandalwood, lavender, bergamot, geranium, jasmine, lemon, palmarosa, Roman chamomile, rosewood and ylang ylang.

Gratitude(TM) -another favorite oil which for me is very grounding. It elevates, soothes and brings relief to the body while helping to foster a grateful attitude. It contains Idaho balsam fir, frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, ylang ylang and rosewood.

Present Time(TM) -as the name indicates, this oil helps to create a feeling of being in the moment. In grief and sorrow there is often the problem of living in the past with difficulty moving into the present or future. This blend contains neroli, ylang ylang and spruce.

Essential Oils Can Help You Deal With Diabetes – The Sweet Taste in Life

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Diabetes is rampant in America because of our love affair with sugar. Even children are now succumbing to Type II diabetes which is directly related to diet. In type II diabetes, the pancreas continues to produce insulin, sometimes even at higher-than-normal levels. However, the body develops resistance to the effects of insulin so there is not enough insulin to meet the body’s needs. Obesity is the chief risk factor for developing type II diabetes and 80-90% of people with this disorder are overweight or obese. Because obesity causes insulin resistance, obese people need very large amounts of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Western medicine treats diabetes with diet, exercise, education and for most people, drugs. If people with diabetes strictly control their blood sugar levels, complications are less likely to develop. The goal of diabetes treatment is to keep blood sugar levels within the normal range as much as possible. People with diabetes benefit greatly from learning about their disorder, understanding how diet and exercise affect their blood sugar levels, and knowing how to avoid complications.

What Can Aromatherapists Offer Type II Diabetics?

Essential oils are most effective with infections and least effect with metabolic disorders. Diabetes is one of those metabolic disorders. However some individuals get off their diabetic medications and even insulin with great vigilance, diet and exercise. Just as they have learned to test their blood sugars, daily, they will need to continue daily testing when on a regime of essential oils.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is a strongly aromatic annual herb traditionally used in the form of an infusion for children’s diarrhea, digestive upsets, griping pains anorexia and gas. It was studied in Egupt for its effects in lowering glucose and insulin levels and supporting pancreatic function. This oil can promote digestion and also has produces a mild feeling of euphoria. Many us it in conjunction with dill oil to promote pancreatic health and to aid in the control of diabetes. It is generally non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing.

Dill (Anethum graveolens) is traditionally used in the East and West as a digestive aid for indigestion, wind, colic, especially in children. Research has shown dill has anti-diabetic, antispasmodic, antibacterial and expectorant properties. It is a pancreatic stimulant and an insulin-blood sugar regulator. It has many similar properties to fennel making it good for digestive problems.

These are the two primary oils; other oils that have shown some ability to help include fennel, geranium, cinnamon, and pine.

Essential Oils – How to Take a Drop of Oil Without Wasting It

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Essential oils are very precious and should not be wasted. Often only a drop or two is sufficient. In this case it is not true that if a little works, more is better. When opening a bottle, be careful not to touch the lip of the bottle as this may leave skin cells and contaminate your bottle. Hold the bottle a few inches from your open palm and slowly drip one to two drops in your palm. Then close the bottle tightly to prevent the aromatic oil from evaporating. Some oils are more “runny” than others. The chemistry of each oil is different-those high in monoterpenes will be thicker and may even get more viscous each time the bottle is opened. This is because of oxidation. The oils of myrrh and sandalwood are the most famous oils for this.

If you are going to anoint a client or someone else, dip your index finger into the oil in your other palm and place it on the person’s brow or hands. Make sure they have no skin sensitivities before doing this. If you have any doubt, then you may need to dilute the oil first. If other parts of the body need to be anointed, I generally ask the person to hold out their hand. I then place one or two drops of the chosen oil in their palm and ask them to place it on their own body. Be sure to specifically tell them to put it on their skin and not on their clothing. If you intend to run your hands through the field around the body to clear congested energy, first rotate both palms together clockwise several times to evenly distribute the oil in your hands.

Roll-Ons–A Great New Concept

What is even better is to use roll-ons. Some companies are now putting their best selling oils in roll-on bottles. Finally-a great way to use essential oils without using too much oil or getting it all over your clothes.

Seven Toxic Essential Oils

Essential Oils Articles No Comments »

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Essential oils are what are used in aromatherapy. They provide many valuable benefits, however there are essential oils that are potentially hazardous. They are as follows.

Pennyroyal – an infusion of the leaves makes a safe digestive tea, but the essential oil can kill when taken internally.

Calamus – the European calamus contains a cancer causing terpene called thujone that is toxic to the nervous system. The American calamus is free of this chemical and is safe. The identity of the calamus oil is uncertain – so don’t use it internally.

Wormwood – oil has an active ingredient called absinthe which is mind altering. It also contains thujone. Don’t use the oil internally without the supervision of a herbalist.

Tansy – oil also contains thujone and is also very toxic.

Wormseed – was traditionally used to kill worms but the oil is highly toxic and has killed children who were given too much.

Wintergreen – the oil contains a toxic terpene called methyl salicylate which is in the same class as aspirin. People use it externally to relieve aches and pains of neuralgia and arthritis.

Camphor – The essential oil occurs in a semi-solid buttery state at room temperature (not as a liquid as most essential oils). Camphor is a single compound, a monoterpene, which is toxic to the nervous system causing mental confusion, nausea and vomiting when taken internally. Camphor is commonly used externally in products to clear the nasal passages, open the chest, stimulate circulation and relieve pain.

It is best to avoid using an essential oil internally – but always seek the advice of a herbalist before use internally. In addition do not use the following essential oils if you have:

· high blood pressure: hyssop, rosemary, sage or thyme.

· epilepsy: sweet fennel, hyssop, sage, rosemary and wormwood

· skin irritation: allspice, basil, bay, birch, bitter almond, black pepper, cassia, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, citronella, clove bud, costus, cumin, fennel, fir needle, ginger, lemon, lemon grass, lemon verbena, melissa, myrrh, oak moss, orange peppermint, oregano, parsley seed, peppermint, pimento berry, pine, tagetes, tea tree, red and wile thyme and wintergreen.

The following essential oils will make your skin more sensitive to sunlight: all citrus oils, angelica, bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange and lemon verbena.

If essential oils get into your eyes immediately flush with cold milk or vegetable oil to dilute. If stinging persists, seek medical attention. If undiluted essential oils get onto your hands use cream or vegetable oil to dilute and wash with soap and warm water. Repeat this process if necessary.

The following essential oils are safe to use on the skin during pregnancy:

chamomile
grapefruit
jasmine
lavender
neroli
rose
ylang-ylang

Do not be scared to use essential oils, just learn these simple precautions and follow them. Always be cautious.

What exactly is fibromyalgia? Actually it is a syndrome or collection of symptoms that makes it very difficult to define. Generally, people will describe their fibromyalgia as “hurting all over” and the problem is not well understood by the medical community.  There is no test that can conclusively determine whether someone has fibromyalgia or not. Complimentary or alternative medicine seems to make more progress treating these symptoms than taking drugs. Complimentary medicine can offer such things as trigger point therapy, hypnosis, light therapy, low frequency sound therapy, craniosacral therapy, Reiki and Healing Touch therapy, Watsu water therapy, and magnet therapy.  Colon therapy like colonics or digestive cleanses can bring fibromyalgia relief by eliminating toxins in your body which can cause an aggravation of fibromyalgia symptoms.

One theory is that fibromyalgia is an “acid” condition in the body due to a toxic liver. The best natural treatments for fibromyalgia are the omega-3 fats such as flax seed, proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain and pancreatin and MSM.

What Kind of Symptoms Are We Talking About?

Not all of these symptoms will apply to all patients. Some common signs and symptoms include: widespread pain, nausea, dizziness, morning stiffness, sleep disorders, TMJ problems, skin complaints, depression, myofascial pain, weather changes, chronic headaches, multiple chemical sensitivities, chest symptoms, dysmenorrhea, muscle twitches and weakness, restless leg syndrome, fatigue, urinary and pelvic problems, cold symptoms, “fibrofog” or cognitive  or memory impairment, vision problems, weight gain and anxiety.

How Can Essential Oils Help with These Symptoms?

Essential oils can help relieve many of the fibromyalgia symptoms in a massage, in a bath, as well as simple diffusion or inhalation. For a therapeutic massage use 10-12 drops of a blend of oils in a one-ounce base of carrier oil. Or you could mix the oils in a 50-50 dilution and massage 2-4 drops on painful locations. Use a warm compress. Raindrop technique which uses nine essential oils can be helpful weekly. I only recommend therapeutic grade essential oils produced by a company that test every single batch of oils. Don’t just take their word for it–go and see for yourself.

The essential oils most useful in treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia are:

For pain relief: lavender, sweet marjoram, petitgrain, Roman and German chamomiles, clary sage, lemongrass, helichrysum, peppermint, ginger, and black pepper. Lavender with peppermint and helichrysum creates an anti-inflammatory synergy. Other anti-inflammatory oils include nutmeg, balsam fir, white fir, and wintergreen.

For stress/anxiety relief: rose, frankincense, clary sage, sweet orange, bergamot, grapefruit, ylang ylang, sandalwood, neroli, sweet marjoram, petitgrain, tangerine, lavender, geranium, and jasmine.

For a peaceful sleep: lavender, neroli, jasmine, marjoram, Roman chamomile, valerian or RutaVaLa (a blend of lavender, valerian and ruta or rue).

For headaches: lavender, peppermint, marjoram, basil, or Roman chamomile.

For increased circulation: rosemary, ginger, black pepper, peppermint, lemongrass or geranium.

Aromatherapy oils are also recognized as essential oils as they create the foundation of aromatherapy and motivate the body, mind and the spirit. Essential oils are the vigorous derivates of plants and their stems, fruits, roots and flowers. In aromatherapy, these oils are used in combination with carrier oils like apricot kernel, jojoba, sweet almond and grapeseed and are applied on the body for massaging. Aromatherapy is now used to treat a whole range of conditions and is believed to work on people both physically and psychologically.

The first part of the theory is that when you smell an essential oil, it triggers your limbic system – the part of the brain that controls emotions and stores and retrieves learned memories – and relaxes you. The other part of the theory is that the essential oils are absorbed through the skin, and have medicinal properties which act on the cause of the problem.
